G. Robert Fitz, MD, 90, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on May 8, 1934, in Canton, Ohio, to the late George R. and Mae Fitz. A 1952 graduate of Lehman High School, he went on to spend the next 14 years at The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Medical Science, a Master of Anatomy and Physiology, and a Doctor of Medicine. He then completed his OB-GYN residency at OSU, serving as chief resident in his final year.
Following his residency, Bob proudly served as a captain in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In 1968, he returned to Canton to begin his 46-year career in obstetrics and gynecology at Stark County Women's Clinic and Atrium OB-GYN. He was on staff at Aultman Hospital for over 45 years, contributing to numerous committees. Bob was an associate professor of OB-GYN at NEOMED where he enjoyed teaching residents and medical students. He served on NEOMED's Continuing Education Committee for more than 20 years. Additionally, he was a fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Beyond his medical career, Bob was an avid boater, whether sailing the Caribbean or cruising the Great Lakes. He had a deep appreciation for antique cars, especially his beautifully restored 1947 Packard Super Clipper. A past member of the Congress Lake Club, he enjoyed golfing and leisurely cruises on his float boat.
A lifelong fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Bob was a member of the Ohio State President's Club and held season football tickets for an incredible 72 years. Go Buckeyes!
