Obituary

Fred Ray Mick, age 91, of Sarasota FL, formerly of Uniontown, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, August 11, 2018, at the Aultman Compassionate Care Center. He was born in 1926 in Burnsville, WV, a Christmas Day present to the late Charles and Lizzie (Sands) Mick. When he was 14, the family moved to Akron, and eventually to Uniontown. Fred joined the Army and served two years in Alaska during the Korean War, working in communications. He was a supervisor at Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton before retiring in 1987 after 40 years of work. In 1957 Fred married Leona King, who had grown up Amish in Uniontown. They loved FL so much that they honeymooned there, vacationed there, and eventually became snowbirds after his retirement. Fred became an amazing caregiver to Leona in her later years of declining health. They shared 58 years of marriage until her passing in 2015. Fred was blessed with outstanding mechanical and engineering ability, coupled with a strong work ethic. His shop was a busy place as a parade of friends and neighbors came with equipment for him to repair. He remodeled, built houses and boats, and his large Dutch windmill graced his backyard. For relaxation he loved camping, fishing, and deer hunting. After retirement, he used his talents to volunteer, which included supervising the construction of two wilderness boys' camps, and working with Impact North Ministries in northwestern Ontario. Fred was the last survivor of his immediate family and was preceded in death by his wife Leona, and four sisters and two brothers. Fred is survived by his daughters, Mary Jo (John) Fohner of Mount Holly, NC and Sharon (Alvin) Zook of Uniontown; grandchildren Kara Fohner (husband Jesse Donovan), and David, Joshua and Hannah Fohner, all of NC; nieces and nephews ; step-grandchildren; and Sam (Helen) Hostetler, of Sarasota, FL, his best friend who was like the son he never had. The family would like to thank Sam Hostetler, Sharon Lemon and Grace Shahan for the invaluable assistance they lovingly supplied as the sun set on Fred's earthly journey. Fred was a member of Hartville Conservative Mennonite Church for 60+ years. Calling hours will be held there Thursday, August 16, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held there Friday, August 17 at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
