Fred L. "Fritz" Bates, age, 93, of Evanston, IL, formerly of Buchanan, MI, and Alliance, OH, died Saturday, May 25, 2024, under hospice care at Westminster Place of the Presbyterian Homes in Evanston.
Born in Beechwood, OH, on March 12, 1931, Fred's life was one marked by dedication, warmth, and a love for the simple joys that life offers. Fred's journey in education began in Alliance, OH, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree from Mt. Union University. His thirst for knowledge and service led him to the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where he graduated with a diploma that would set the stage for a distinguished career in funeral service. Fred's professional path was deeply intertwined with the international association of National Selected Morticians, now known as Selected Independent Funeral Homes. He joined the association in 1968, and his commitment and leadership were evident as he ascended to the role of Executive Director, a position he held from 1985 until his retirement in 1996. His colleague of ten years, Mark Higgins, recalls Fred's benevolent spirit and his readiness to offer guidance or an empathetic ear to anyone in need. Beyond his professional endeavors, Fred was a man of many passions. An avid fisherman, he found solace and excitement in the tranquility of nature. His enthusiasm for Indy Car Racing was unmatched, and he reveled in the exhilaration of the sport. Retirement brought new adventures at his beloved cabin in lower Michigan, where he cherished the time spent with family and friends.
Fred's life was enriched by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Margery "Mudge" Bates, née Horton; his sons, Scott Bates and his wife, Julie Bowman, and Todd Bates; his grandchildren, Camille and Evan Bates. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Pierce.
A U.S. Army Veteran, Fred carried the values of service and integrity throughout his life. His legacy is one of kindness, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. Fred L. Bates will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a guiding light in the lives of those he touched.
