Florence Gretchen Mitchell age, 91 of Canton died Sunday afternoon in the Canton Regency. Born in in Canton to the late John & Gretchen (Hayes) Callender she was a graduate Kent State University in 1961. Gretchen was a registered nurse having served in the Army during WW II, and was a retired school teacher from the Canton City Schools having taught at Baxter & McGregor Schools. Following retirement she and her husband volunteered as reading tutors and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was long time and loyal member of First Baptist Church,Home Builders Sunday School Class and the Disabled American Veterans. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Joe I. Mitchell in 2008 and a daughter: Sally Jo Mitchell. Survivors include three sons: Dr. Joe I. Mitchell, Jr and Rita Irmini of Salinas, CA, John & Mary Lou Mitchell of Canton and Terry Mitchell and Barb Lowry of N. Canton. Eight grandchildren: Molly, Kate, Anne, Michelle, Mara, Joe, Megan and Ryan; seven great grandchildren. Sister: Sally Lewis of Gahanna, OH. Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin E. Slyh officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
