Everett Howard McDaniels July 2, 1920 - May 29, 2012 Everett H. McDaniels, devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, after a long and event-filled life. Everett was born on July 2, 1920, the second of three children to Howard and Florice McDaniels. He was raised in Hornell, New York, and graduated from Hornell High School in 1938. Everett, or "Skinny" as he was known then, married his life-long schoolmate Hazel McDaniels on September 24, 1944. Together they had three children, David, Thom, and Beth Ann. Everett moved to Ohio with his family in 1952, and resided in Orrville, Ohio, for much of his adult life. He called Canton his home since 1989. Survivors include children, David (Jane) McDaniels of Port Townsend, WA, Thom (Christine) of Massillon, and Beth Ann (Michael) Stevens of Owings Mills, MD; grandsons, Iain and Tobias McDaniels, Jason Frost, Joshua and Benjamin McDaniels, and Christopher Stevens; great grandchildren Ethan Frost, Jake and Zeke McDaniels, and Jack Thomas, Maddie, and Livia McDaniels; and numerous nieces and nephews. Everett was preceded in death by his wife Hazel and his beloved granddaughter Allison Stevens. Everett had a long career in the home furnishings business. He started as a carpet and tile installer in upstate New York, and that work brought him to Ohio to work for the family-owned Maibach's in nearby Sterling, OH. He transitioned to sales and worked for both Maibach's and the May Company in that capacity; he ended his career as a sales rep for several Carolina furniture manufacturers. An enlistee following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was fiercely proud of his military service. He eagerly told people as recently as last summer that "I wasn't in the Marines; I am a Marine." Semper Fi, Ev. A versatile handyman, Everett worked for and with his son David constructing hundreds of homes both inside and outside USA borders for Habitat for Humanity. Everett was a loyal and active supporter of the McKinley athletic programs, and he was until recently a member of the Bulldog Athletic Association and the McKinley Adult Booster Club. He was an enthusiastic volunteer during Hall of Fame weekend and faithfully attended the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club where he formed many friendships that crossed school district, color, and mascot lines. Most recently he enjoyed the Bingo games played at the Canton Regency where he was rumored to be a frequent winner. "Remember to take your dimes with you, Dad." Friends are invited to the Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Avenue North, Canton, on Monday, June 4, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A short prayer service will follow the visitation conducted by Kevin O'Brien. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution to the Allison Taylor Stevens Memorial, Garrison Forest School, 300 Garrison Forest Rd., Owings Mills, MD 21117.
