IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn Christman
Carlisle Hilkey
September 22, 1931 – October 7, 2008
Evelyn Christman Carlisle Hilkey Evelyn Hilkey, 77, went home to be with her Lord and Savior October 7, 2008. Evelyn was born in Akron, Ohio September 22, 1931, to Bertha (Roley) and Harold Christman. After living in Hartville since 1964 she moved to North Canton two years ago. She changed our lives through her love. In the midst of raising children, Evelyn pursued a nursing degree and began a 20 year career at Mercy Medical Center. She was a terrible money manager because she gave it all away. Evelyn helped her grandchildren get through college with her gifts and encouragement. She supported five third world children. She knew their names and their stories; she showed us their pictures and sent them little extras to make their lives easier. She affected the people of an entire village when she purchased an ox for their use. She bought a cow for a poor family with 7 children in Haiti and changed their lives forever. She delighted in trips through Macy's in her wheelchair to pick out beautiful things for everyone she loved. She was famous for buying a weekly lottery ticket and figuring out how she would spend all the money to help others. She never won but she was always giving anyway. She was an advocate for adoption and foster care, trying to talk everyone into adopting children. Evelyn especially wanted elderly people to realize they could continue to make a contribution. She and her sister started a camp fund and sent over 1,000 children to Camp Carl. Evelyn saw only the good in everyone, rarely uttering a negative word. She saw beauty in all of life. She was an undiscovered artist. She made paper dolls for us when we were young and exquisite porcelain dolls later in life. She planted flowers and arranged them for the kitchen table with her lovely, slender hands. Her eyes lit up to see her favorite doctors when they came to visit her in the hospital. We thank Dr. Ramana Podugu, Dr. Jehad Y. Asphora, and Mercy Medical Center for their excellent care. We are deeply grateful to our sister Jenny and her dear husband, Terry for their tender loving care of mom, Ken, and the children these past two years. Oh, how she loved you and the life you created for her in your big house. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Harold Carlisle, and children, baby Christopher, Clifford James, and Theresa; brother, Harold Christman Jr. and sister, Midge Nichols. She will miss her dear sisters and sister-in-law; Chris Outland, Linda Zunk, and Donna Loftis. She leaves her beloved husband of 13 years, C. Kenneth Hilkey and 11 children; Kathryn Carlisle Smith (Kim), Spring Carlisle Keasler (Gary), Jennifer Carlisle Blevins (Terry), Mary Carlisle Riley (Dennis and family), Hal Carlisle (LeeAnn), Stephen Glancy (Lori), Dale Glancy (Angie), Megan Hilkey, Kristen Hilkey, Michael Hilkey, and Justin Hilkey. She loved all her children equally. She also treasured her 22 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mother embraced life. She faced her difficulties and challenges with faith and integrity. We are forever thankful and indebted for the legacy of love that she left us. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren rise up and call her blessed. Calling hours are Thursday (Today) 4-8 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home, Hartville.
