Ethel J. Deames age 93, of Bolivar. Born in Bedford, Ohio on February 8, 1917, the sixth of ten children to Orin and Eva (Lindburg) Baker. Went to be with Jesus on January 20, 2011. She moved to Canton during her fourth grade year where she attended Cedar Grade School and McKinley High School from which she graduated in 1935 She continued her education at Canton Actual Business College before working at J.C. Penny, Kobackers, and Canton Hardware until the birth of her first child in 1942. During World War II, she raised her son alone while her husband served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. After his return, they were blessed with two daughters. Ethel subsequently worked for the State of Ohio during construction of Interstate 77 and then, The Letter Shop. She taught Sunday School at Martin Luther Church and was deeply involved in other church programs including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Vacation Bible School. For many years she was the senior Girl Scout Leader of Troop 172 at Grace United Church of Christ and was active in adult leadership for the Order of Job's Daughters at the Canton Masonic Temple. She held many volunteer offices with the Worley School PTA and the Stark County Board of Elections. Ethel was a member of the Delta Chapter of the Eastern Star and a long-time officer of the Nazir Caldron. She never lost her devotion to her beloved McKinley Bulldogs whose games she faithfully attended for over 50 years. She was also an avid bowler and officer in the Martin Luther and Canton City School bowling leagues. In 1961, she became the Secretary at Baxter Elementary School where she served for 18 years. Upon retiring, she received her proudest possession, a hand-signed, wall-sized quilt presented from hundreds of students, friends, and fellow employees of Baxter School. She was a member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church. Ethel is survived by her devoted husband of 71 years, William A. Deames of Bolivar; two brothers, Bill and Bud Baker of Arizona; sister Joyce Nell of Connecticut; son Billy Deames (Marilyn) of Destin, Fl.; two daughters, Kitty Burgett of Canton and Dotty Hartzell of Bolivar; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the caring professionals at Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar for all their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers contributions in Ethel's memory may be made to the charity of your choosing. A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 N.
