Obituary

Elmer S. Yoder Elmer S. Yoder, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2007, after a three week illness. Born October 6, 1925, near Somerset, Pennsylvania, he moved to Hartville in 1950 when he married Esther J. Yoder. Elmer taught six years at Lake Center Christian School, Hartville, and twenty-three years in Louisville Public Schools. Elmer was ordained to the ministry in 1956 and served as minister at Marlboro Mennonite Church and also at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Hartville. He was overseer of Pleasant View Mennonite Church near Berlin, Ohio, for six years. He was a member of Cornerstone Mennonite Church in Hartville, of the Conservative Mennonite Conference, and, since 1985, has served as Conference Historian. He served six years as editor of Missionary Bulletin, a Conference paper, and edited its successor, Brotherhood Beacon, for twelve years. He has been president of the Stark County Mennonite & Amish Historical Society for twenty-seven years, and served ten years as vice president of Lake Township Historical Society. He has served twelve years as editor of the quarterly eight-page paper, Heritage, published by the Stark County Mennonite and Amish Historical Society. Elmer worked for twenty years on the Hartville Migrant Council and more than twelve years in the Lake Area seniors' ministry. He was president of the Hartville Gift and Thrift Shoppe board for six years. He served many years on the boards of Eastern Mennonite University, Rosedale Bible College, Central Christian School, and Lake Center Christian School. He has been engaged in writing congregational and community histories since 1980. He has written twelve books and co-authored two books. Elmer's hobby was photography, having prepared six slide shows with more than 325 showings. Elmer leaves his wife Esther, a daughter, Dorcas Eberly, and two sons, Elwood and Jason. Dorcas, of Hartville, is married to Nelson Eberly and they have three children: Eric, Leshan, China; Troy, Akron, Ohio; and, Amy, Greentown, Ohio. Elwood, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, is married to Joy (Risser) Yoder and they have three children, Nathaniel, Maria, and Philip. Jason, of Westcliffe, Colorado, is married to Naomi (Miller) Yoder and they have six children, Elizabeth, Jessica, Daniel, Lydia, Sadie, and Jacob. Elmer leaves two great-grandchildren, Kole and Danielle Eberly, son and daughter of Troy and Kara (Miller) Eberly. Elmer was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Donna-Marie (Francis) Yoder, first wife of Jason Yoder, his parents Simon L. and Lydia Yoder, of Montezuma, Georgia, a sister, Dorothy Yoder, and an infant brother, Paul. Also surviving Elmer are eight brothers and sisters. Thelma Yoder, East Dublin, Georgia; Denver Yoder, Hartselle, Alabama; Galen Yoder, San Vito, Costa Rica; Anna Hershberger, Honea Path, South Carolina; Pauline Yoder, Montezuma, Georgia; Bertha Yoder, Montezuma, Georgia; Marilyn Yoder, Mill Creek, Pennsylvania; and, Gerald Yoder, San Carlos, Costa Rica. Calling hours are Monday, September 17, 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, at Cornerstone Mennonite Church in Hartville. The funeral is Tuesday, September 18, 1:00 PM at Cornerstone Mennonite Church.
