Elizabeth "JoAn" Smith passed away on October 6, 2018 in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones. She was 80 years old. She was born on June 15, 1938 in New Bethlehem, PA to the late Naval Chaplain William and Ruth "McClure" Organ. JoAn received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from the College of Wooster in 1960, and after raising her four children, attended Walsh College and received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She served as a counselor with Child and Adolescent Services in Canton. JoAn was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, a Deacon, and a dedicated member of their Mission West team ministering to members of the Ogala Lakota Reservation in Porcupine, South Dakota for many years. JoAn had many passions in life. A few, but certainly not all, include horseback riding (especially her beloved horse Meteor), sewing, embroidery, working with stained glass, snow skiing and water skiing with her children and grandchildren, as well as going on hunting trips with her husband. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Gerald Smith, whom she met while attending the College of Wooster. She is also survived by her children Alison (Brian) Nutt of North Canton, Jennifer (Rick) Dayton of Pittsburgh, Darrell (Amy) Smith of Jackson Twp., Gregory (Nadine) Smith of Laguna Vista, TX and grandchildren Kathryn & Jonathan Nutt, Steven, Matthew, & Ryan Dayton, Bethany, Laurel, Alexa & Weston Smith and Savannah, Luke & Jesse Smith. JoAn was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Ruth Krebs. Calling hours will be Friday, October 12, 2018 at Christ Presbyterian Church at 530 Tuscarawas St. W, Canton, Ohio 44702 from 9:00-10:45 am, with the funeral beginning at 11:00 am at the church with Rev. David de Vries and Rev. Brian Nutt officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church for Camp Wakonda.
