Elizabeth "Bette" Ritz, passed away peacefully on July 11th among family and friends at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio shortly before her 97th birthday. Bette, born and raised in Canton, remained here until retiring to Sun City Center, Florida for 40 years before returning home to Ohio last year.
Bette, oldest child of Marieta and David Bowling, she is preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, John V. Ritz, and her Brother, Robert Bowling and sister, Maxine Cinadr. Bette is survived by her daughter, Judith "Cleo" Schimmel (Paul); granddaughters, K. Leyla Schimmel and Katherine D. Schimmel; 8 great grandchildren, in Andover, Massachusetts and Escondido, California; nephews, Martin Cinadr III (Janet), David Cinadr (Kathy), Tom Cinadr (Susie), John Cinadr (Mary) and Chuck Cinadr; niece, Betsy McCafferty (Kerry); and numerous great and great, great nephews and nieces.
Bette was a mentor and role model to many earning a college degree in the early 40's and working for the (East Ohio) Gas Company as a Home Economist for over 30 years. She loved to cook and to show others how to cook. She was considered by many to be Martha Stewart before there was a Martha Stewart. Bette was an avid Ohio State and Cleveland Indians fan, and routed on the Tampa Devil Rays during her time in Florida.
There will be a brief viewing at Arnold Funeral Home at 1517 Market Ave N in Canton, Ohio at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 20th, followed by a Memorial Mass at Noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bette will be laid to rest next to her husband John at North Lawn Cemetery. Donations may be made in Bette's honor to Regina Health Center, 5232 Broadview Rd, Richfield, Ohio 44286.
