Sayers
September 30, 1920 – January 3, 2016
Dorothy (Anker) Sayers, age 95, of North Canton, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her daughter and grandchildren on January 2, 2015. She was born in Akron, the daughter of Albert G. and Bessie Patterson Anker. After graduating from North High School, Dorothy attended St. Louis Institute of Music and Washington University, from which she earned an Advanced Teaching Degree. Dorothy taught private piano lessons in Akron while continuing studies at KSU and holding an office with the Ohio Music Teachers Association. She served on the boards of Witan, Weathervane Theater and First Methodist Church, as well as volunteering at Stan Hywet. As a founding member of the Greater Akron Musical Association, she was instrumental in helping with the creation of the Akron Symphony Orchestra in 1951. She and her husband, Jim, remained on the board of the Greater Akron Musical Association until they moved to Mt. Lebanon, PA in 1959. James Sayers was subsequently transferred to Canton, OH, and he and Dorothy and their daughter, Krista, happily returned to their home state. In the Canton area, Dorothy served in various New Neighbor/Newcomer positions and on the boards of Faith Methodist Church, Fine Arts, Friends of the Library, and the Canton Symphony Orchestra. She was named an honorary member of the orchestra board and the Symphony League, which she had also served as President. James Sayers was deceased in 1999, after 53 years of marriage. Dorothy is survived by their beloved daughter, Krista Shaw of North Canton; grandchildren, Carrie (Lonn) Lebo of Mechanicsburg, PA; Janna (Travis) Thompson of Greenville, NC; and Benjamin Shaw of Charlotte, NC; and six great-grandchildren, Kate (10), JJ (9), Paige (6), Riley (4), Bella (3), and Clara (8 months).
