Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on May 18, 1920, to Amy Bayne and Douglas Maitland Murphy, she grew up in Ensenada, Puerto Rico. She met John Rutherford Cromb Jr., Captain U.S. Army Air Corps, of Fargo, North Dakota and they were married on July 8,1943, a union that lasted 64 years. In addition to her family and friends, Dorothy loved her island home of Puerto Rico and her books. She had a green thumb, especially enjoyed raising tropical plants, and a wonderful collection of shells from all over the world. She had an enthusiasm for life, trying new things, visiting new places, and could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. A cradle Episcopalian, she was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church Canton, Ohio. She was also a member of the Canton Art Museum and Fine Arts Association. She is preceded in death by her husband John, infant son Douglas Maitland, sisters Ida, Jean, Helen (Kitty), and brother Ian Murphy. Additionally, she is survived by sister-in-law Rose Murphy of Falling Water, WV, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday August 15, 2015, the Rev. Dustin Berg officiating. Interment, St. Mark's Columbarium. There will be no calling hours but friends will be received after the service.
