IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy
Art
September 13, 1915 – October 23, 2006
Dorothy Art, age 91, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2006. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio to Jacob and Esther Levine and in 1947 moved to Canton with her late husband, Herbert Art, the co-owner of Art's Diamond Jewelers. In addition to raising her three children and working periodically at Art's, she was very active in the Temple Israel Sisterhood, Hadassah and the Jewish Community Center. She and Ann Mestel began the Temple's Union Grams, a service which sends out messages for special occasions to Temple members, and which still continues to this day. Mrs. Art was a Gray Lady at Aultman Hospital for over 15 years, and was chairman of scheduling Gray Ladies for several years. Mrs. Art was a hands-on care giver and her warm and caring nurturing of the patients made her a favorite at the hospital. In 2000 the Canton Repository reran an article and photograph featuring Mrs. Art and another Gray Lady who served breakfast to a group of children temporarily housed at the Spanish-American Center during the January 23, 1959 flood which affected many counties in Ohio. Mrs. Art was an avid golfer, reader and gourmet cook. She was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her son, Robert Art and his wife, Suzanne, of Boston, her daughter Jeri Meltzer and her husband, Alan, of Canton and her youngest daughter, Debora Art, of San Diego. Mrs. Art is also survived by her youngest sister, Pepi Wolfe of Youngstown. She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Paul Levine, and older sister, Ethel Tuber. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and wife, Norman and Goldie Art, formerly of Canton (now Tucson). She will also be greatly missed by her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Windsor Medical Center and particular thanks to two caring friends, Carol Barker and Dorothy Herald. Memorial services will be held Wednesday (TODAY), October 25th at Noon at Temple Israel, 333 25th Street NW, Canton 44709, with Rabbi Daniel Roberts officiating, followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Temple Israel or to the American Red Cross Stark County Chapter, 525 Market Ave. N., Canton, OH 44702. (Arnold 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
