Obituary

Donald E. Meeks, age 86, of Canton, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. He was born in Canton on January 26, 1929 to the late Charles and Faye (Reibenstein) Meeks and attended McKinley High School. He was a United States Navy Veteran and served in the Korean War. He proudly served on the U.S.S. Salisbury Sound, a seaplane tender, from 1948 - 1952.

Following the Navy, Don married Peggy Coleman and they have been married 62 years. He retired from Diebold Incorporated after 35 years of service. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren who were a source of great joy to him. He was beloved and cherished by his entire family. He loved to garden, read, and keep up with the news and politics but his favorite activity was going for walks with his four legged buddy, Jax. He could regularly be seen talking to people in the neighborhood during his walks.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; daughters and sons-in-law Diane and Scott Jacob of Canton, Sandra Meeks and Michael Recktenwalt of Canton; granddaughters and husbands Stacey (Jacob) and Michael Cruz of Chicago, Jen (Jacob) and Demetrios Geniatakis of Canton; great grandson Evan Jacob Cruz; brother Robert Meeks; sister-in-law Louise Yung; also a son James and many other relatives. Preceeded in death by sisters Betty McFarland, Anna Nolan and brother and sister-in-law Richard and Betty Meeks and his beloved dog, Corrie.

A private service for immediate family was held on Thursday at Arnold Funeral Home in Canton. On Sunday during regular church services a time of remembrance will be observed at Lowell Church.

The family has made the following suggestions for memorial donations, a few of Don's favorite non-profits: The McKinley Presidential Library and Museum or The Veterans of Foreign Wars.
