Dave "Pop Pop" Whitmer, age 85, was surrounded by his loving family in his North Canton home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, when he moved on to the most beautiful garden he could ever imagine. Dave was an avid gardener and was harvesting vegetables and enjoying the fall leaves the day before he suffered fatal strokes. Dave was born in Canton, Ohio to Laura (Watkins) and Earl Whitmer and is survived by his wife of sixty years, Ronalee Whitmer; his brother, Warren (Mary Lou) Whitmer and sister, Mary (Tom) Guernsey; his five children, David Whitmer, Tom (Chris) Whitmer, Jenny (Tony) DiMattio, Kathy (Bob) Dannemiller, and Kristen (Evan) Mory; his six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Dave was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and served a tour in Guam where he practiced his carpentry. Dave was also a proud Buckeye and graduated from The Ohio State University, School of Agriculture. Dave utilized his agriculture and carpentry skills and built the most wonderful and supportive life for his family doing what he loved. Dave also enjoyed raising many pets and farm animals, bowling, fishing (including during annual family trips to Canada), hunting, sporting events, crafting and recreation with family. He was a relentless hard worker with a larger-than-life heart that captured all who came to know him. He is a hero to his family and friends, and his quiet strength and love will continue to live on in his family, friends and precious memories. Funeral services will be private for the family.
