Obituary

David Allan Shanklin, age 67, passed away Wednesday following a courageous battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was the male of twins born in Massillon May 23, 1944, to Donald W. and the late Thelma Chivers Shanklin. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nancy Rhodes Shanklin, son, Jeff W. Shanklin, daughter and son-in-law, Jen and Shaun Morgan, three beloved grandchildren Joelle, Josiah and Esther Morgan, father Donald W. Shanklin, two sisters Susanne Huff (Don) and Donna Jean Brown (Roy). Numerous other relatives, church family, friends and neighbors grieve his loss and the suffering he experienced, and remember him fondly with admiration and respect. Dave graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1962 and immediately assumed a machinist apprenticeship with the Timken Co. In 1966 he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving 4 years at Sewart AFB, Smyrna, TN. Following an honorable discharge in 1970, he returned to the Timken Co. and pursued an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stark State Technical College, graduating in June 1977. Retiring as an analyst from Timken Research in 2004, his entire 42 year career was spent with the company. Dave had many interests and hobbies, a few of which were gardening, landscape design, tennis, and woodworking. More than anything, his focus was either spending time with his children and grandchildren or finding ways to be in service to others. As a result of his relationship with Jesus Christ, Dave's devotion to his family and humanity in general was unmatched. Having participated in numerous outreach mission experiences locally, nationally and internationally, the service project closest to his heart was Habitat for Humanity. Knowing he had a terminal disease, he chose to establish the Shanklin Habitat for Humanity Endowment Fund, with monies to be spent on construction, landscape, and budgeting classes for the partner families. During the course of his illness, he thoroughly enjoyed watching the fund grow. The family expresses sincere gratitude to the devoted caregivers of Northeast Professional Home Care, the Windsor Medical Center, and Community Hospice of Stark County. These medical professionals were Dave's earthly angels. Private entombment will take place in North Lawn Mausoleum. A memorial service celebrating the life of this selfless servant will be held October 2, 2011 at 6:00 P.M. in Community Christian Church 210 N. Main St. N. Canton. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dave's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity 2800 Leemont Ave., Canton, OH 44709, noting Shanklin Fund on the Memo line of your check.
