IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Daniel B.
Mcgrew
May 6, 1935 – November 4, 2022
May 6, 1938- November 4, 2022. Daniel Bud McGrew, "Buddy" to family, was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio in the McConnell Street home of his grandparents, Sarah Florence and Charles Hall. Born to parents, Carl McGrew and Mildred Hall, Dan, along with his two older brothers, Dennis and David, and three younger sisters, Nancy McGrath, Bonnie Lockwood, and Anne McGrew grew up in Tuscarawas county surrounded by his loving grandparents and cherished aunts and uncles. Dan was a proud graduate of Dover High School, class of 1956. Dan attended Eastern Nazarene College and ultimately graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
On a momentous day on Eastern Nazarene's campus, Dan met a very lovely young woman, Dottie Mathos McGrew, who would become his beloved wife for 62 years. Dan contributes his success in life to the influence of young Dottie McGrew. Her love for him was a catalyst to return to college and become a successful person and businessman.
Dottie and Dan were married in 1960. They returned to Ohio, Dan's home state, to live as a newly married couple. They settled in North Canton, Ohio, where Dan first worked as a chemistry teacher at Lehman High School, Canton. Dan's career path required many moves for the family but they finally settled to call North Canton, Ohio their home and raised their only and cherished son, Jeffrey Daniel.
Dan transitioned from a teacher to become a salesman. His first sales job was selling door-to-door stainless steel cookware with a lifetime warranty from Vita Craft. His sister, Nancy, was one of his first customers and can attest that the pans are still worthy of use even 60+ years later! He was able to combine his acumen for science and interest in sales at Pfizer Pharmaceutical. He then transitioned to Mobay which became Bayer where he worked for over 25 years as a chemical sales specialist for large industrial accounts. He loved being on the road! But ultimately, he decided to commute more instead of moving so that his son, Jeff, could remain at Hoover High School to graduate. In his wallet for the last 36 years, Dan carried a thank you note from Jeff written when he was in high school that thanked his father for the sacrifice he made for his family. The note was a symbol of life decisions made with a firm commitment to his family.
Dan's faith in God was central to his core beliefs. He was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton, Ohio, where he served as a church elder, a Stephen minister to help those grieving, a member of the food pantry prayer group, and a member of the dementia/Alzheimers support group.
In 2004 and 2006, Dan welcomed his grandchildren, Peter and Anna. Dan became "PaPa" to them. PaPa made the most of his visits to Massachusetts when visiting his grandchildren; he would spend hours outside riding bikes or playing ball. And his grandchildren's favorite farewell as he drove away was in keeping with the late Ohio Senator, John Glenn's farewell:"Don't be long now"
The highlights of Dan's life involved traveling with his wife to Sanibel Island, Florida, Ireland, Scotland, and the southeast/Washington DC corridor and spending time with his family and friends. He loved returning to Detroit with Jeff for the Detroit Car Show, a yearly tradition for over a decade! In his later years he will be remembered for his extraordinary care of his wife, Dottie, and his profound grief upon her passing this past January.
Dan passed away peacefully likely of heartbreak kneeling at his bedside praying. Dan is survived by his son, Jeff, daughter-in-law, Dawn, grandchildren Peter and Anna. He also leaves behind his sisters, Nancy, Bonnie, and Anne, his sister-in-law, Marilyn, and many nieces and nephews, and an extensive and loving group of family and dear friends. His family takes comfort in knowing that Dan is now able to join his beloved, Dottie, in heaven. Their love is eternal, and their favorite song was Johnny Mathis's "The Twelfth of Never". They now rest together at North Lawn Cemetery, Canton, Ohio. Dan did not wish to have a formal memorial service.
