Obituary

Curtis Chapman Martin was born on December 14, 1914 in Proctorville, Ohio to Lindsay Curtis and Lucinda Ward Martin. He departed on the morning of October 19, 2017 after a short illness, aged 102 years and 10 months. He will be greatly missed.

Curt grew up in Mansfield and Millersburg, Ohio where his father was the superintendent of schools. At Millersburg High he played football as a starting end for two years. He also ran track and was on the debate team. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1932 and was offered a football scholarship at Muskingum University. Instead he chose to attend the Ohio State University where he graduated with a law degree in 1937. He passed the Ohio bar exam that summer and practiced law until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1942.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to February 1946, reaching the rank of captain. He became a B-17 and B-24 armaments instructor, and later an armaments officer at several air bases. He also served as defense attorney in a court martial and won, and facilitated the release of soldiers from the military at the end of the war. He married Jennie Uhl of Millersburg on November 4, 1942. After the war he resumed the practice of law, then joined the trust department of the Harter Bank and Trust Company in June of 1947. He became president of the bank in 1967 and vice chairman of the board in 1973. He retired in December 1979 but remained on the board of directors for several years afterward. Curt was an active member of Rotary club for many years. He was involved in many charities, his favorite being the Total Living Center of Canton.

Curt enjoyed golfing with his friends and Jennie. He was a member at Brookside for 49 years and served as club president in 1975. He loved animals, especially dogs and horses, and enjoyed singing and playing guitar and piano. He genuinely liked people, and loved to dance and socialize. He could be dead serious when necessary but had a whimsical sense of humor the rest of the time.

Curtis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jennie, his parents, two brothers and one sister. He is survived by sons, David (Peg) Martin of San Diego, Craig Martin of North Canton, and grandsons, Michael Martin of Redwood City, CA and Ryan Martin of Los Angeles.
