Obituary

Clarence V. Smith, M.D. age 95, of North Canton died Thursday morning, June 16, 2011 in Windsor Medical Center. Born in Massillon, OH to the late Edward J. and Anna Mae (Shilling) Smith, Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science Degree from The College of Wooster and his M.D. degree from the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. He served his internship at Genesee Hospital in Rochester, NY and a residency in internal medicine at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. He interrupted his medical training to serve in the United States Army in Europe during World War II, as a captain in the Medical Corps. Following the war, he continued his training in diabetes and endocrinology at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He started in private practice in Canton in 1948, retiring in 1992. He was a preceptor for Northeastern Ohio Universities of Medicine through Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center. In 1994 Dr. Smith returned part time to private practice, providing nursing home care. Dr. Smith was an active staff member of Aultman Hospital since 1948, serving as president of the medical staff in 1972, and was also a staff member of Mercy Medical Center. His professional affiliations include: member and past president of Stark County Medical Society, Dr. Smith received the first life-time achievement award from the Stark County Medical Society in 1994. Member and past president of Canton Academy of Medicine, delegate to Ohio State Medical Association, member of the American Medical Association, American Diabetes Association, and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. He was instrumental in the formation of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Rootstown, OH and was a member of the admissions committee of the school. He was active in the formation of the Canton Medical Education Foundation, and was instrumental in reestablishing residency programs at Canton hospitals. He was also a member of Retired Business Executives and Professional Men. He was a member of Canton Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a member of Oakwood Country Club, and Christ Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife Mary Rogers Smith, sister Ila Weiford, three brothers Charles, David and John Smith. Survivors include a brother Edward Smith of Medina, OH, four children: Dr. Charles E. Smith (Hannelore) of Canton, Dr. Paul D. Smith (Stephanie) of N. Canton, Dr. Mark S. Smith (Ann) of Traverse City, MI, and Barbara A. Bayless (Robert) of Tucson, AZ, Six grandchildren: Lauren Maxwell, Andrea Ziarko, Daniel, Owen, Colin, and Jesse Smith, and eight great grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 in Christ Presbyterian Church with Rev. David deVries officiating. Internment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, June 24, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home, 710 Tuscarawas St., W. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St., W. Canton, OH 44702 or to Diabetes Education Service of Aultman Hospital, 2600 6th St., S.W.
