Obituary

Caroline K. Glossbrenner, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, December 15, 2009, at the House of Loreto. The failure of a previously fractured hip caused a fall that left her bed-bound several days before. Frail and afflicted with severe dementia, she was not a candidate for surgery. (Retired Timken Vice President Al Glossbrenner, her husband of 61 years, and caregiver for the past several years, died approximately 10 weeks ago.) Caroline Keller Glossbrenner was born in Pittsburgh. She grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, where her father, Russell Keller rose to become a vice president of the Dollar Bank. She graduated from Goucher with a degree in English. She and Al married in 1948. She worked as a secretary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, while Al finished his degree at Lehigh. When Al was offered a job at Timken, they moved to Canton, a town and community they grew to greatly love and help build over the next 60 years. When she was younger, Caroline was active in the Junior League. Having worked at Aultman Hospital as a volunteer, she was later a member of the Aultman Women's Board. She was also a member of College Club and the Garden Club. A faithful parishioner at Christ Presbyterian Church, Caroline took great pride in her Scottish heritage. Her maternal grandparents were named "Forker," a name that was originally MacFarquar. Her paternal grandparents were born near Edinburgh. Over time "McKeller" became "Keller." At one point, when Timken sent Al Glossbrenner to help run Latrobe Steel, Caroline had to put down new roots in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In short order, she had a raft of new friends and fond relationships which she continued to nourish when Al was transferred back to Canton. She had a genuine interest in other people. Caroline Glossbrenner's great love in life-after her husband and family-was cooking and entertaining. She collected recipes by the thousands and experimented with them by the hundreds. Guests at her dinner parties always knew they could count on a good drink, great food, and companionable company. Caroline prided herself on inviting just the right combination of personalities each and every time. Without question, this is how she would have wanted to be remembered. Caroline is survived by her brother, Richard F. Keller of Jacksonville, Florida, her son Alfred and daughter-in-law Emily of Yardley, Pennsylvania, and her son David and four grandchildren (Hilary, Emily, Mark, and Claire) of Bakersfield, California. There will be a special remembrance at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton in 2010.
