Obituary

Dr. Carl L. Rosen of Marlboro Township, Alliance, Ohio passed away Monday March 12, 2012. Carl was born May 26, 1931 to Lillian and Sydney Rosen in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brooklyn College and the Chicago College of Optometry. In 1953 Carl joined the Army Medical Service Corps and was stationed in Germany before returning to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. There Carl met Betty June Braun, Second Lieutenant in the Nursing Corps. Carl and Betty were married March 4, 1956 and had their first child, Janelle in 1957. After leaving the Army, they relocated to Minnesota where their second child, Michael was born in 1958. Also in Minnesota Carl's professional interests shifted to Education. He taught primary school while earning Masters degrees in Psychology and Education, and a PhD in Education from the University of Minnesota. Carl's focus was graduate instruction in reading for elementary school teachers. He specialized in learning disabilities and bilingual education. Carl taught at the universities of Georgia, Georgia State, and Texas at El Paso before moving to Ohio in 1971 to teach at Kent State University, where he directed the Educational Child Study Center. Carl received Kent State's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1977 and retired Professor Emeritus in 1993. In addition to his lengthy and distinguished professional career, Carl's interests were wide ranging. He loved art, music, literature and animals. Carl, Betty and their children bred, raised and showed Salutary Scottish Deerhounds, including many champion show dogs. Carl was a loving husband, nurturing father, and a gentle, honest man who will be missed dearly by his family and friends. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 56 years, his two children, Janelle (Paul Romond) and Michael (Anne), and his granddaughters, Rachel Rosen and Lillian Romond. Receiving hours will be Thursday 4:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home, 504 W. Maple St., Hartville. A Memorial service for Carl will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center, 2821 Woodlawn NW.
