Obituary

Bonita Joan Surbey, age 81, transitioned to her eternal home on November 3, 2017. Bonnie lived most of her life in North Canton, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Neal P. Surbey. She is survived by her only child, Diane Surbey Anderson and her son-in-law, Bill Anderson. Bonnie leaves behind her sister, Nancy Lee Ehlers, her brother, Jeffrey Speicher, her brother-inlaw Fernando Montenegro Torres, her brother Bruce Speicher, her sister-in-law Nancy Speicher, and her brother Douglas Speicher. She is also survived by Kara Speicher Johansen and Ellen Speicher, as well as many other nieces and nephews. Bonnie also leaves behind her beloved friend Margie Wise. Bonnie's life focus was service to others, usually through her gift of baking. Her happiest moments were spent in her kitchen in a flurry of flour and sugar, creating countless cookies to share with friends and family. Her specialty was her pie crust, a skill learned at age 9 in her grandmother's kitchen and perfected over 72 years of delicately working the dough to create yet another delicious masterpiece. In the last year, Bonnie continued her baking ministry in her new 30th floor home overlooking Lake Michigan in Chicago, where she delighted neighbors and staff with her creations. Bonnie took great joy in being a part of the award-winning Community Garden in her senior living building. Bonnie also served her church communities using her vocal gift. She was a proud member of the choir at Christ Presbyterian Church and later, The North Canton Chapel. One of her final admonitions was to "always keep music in your home." Bonnie's favorite title was that of Mother. The last book she ever read was Barbara Mahany's Motherprayer, Lessons in Loving, summarizing her life's work. Her parting words were "to love, to serve…one cookie, one person at a time." Bonnie's last gift of service was of self. She was pleased to donate her body to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine to the next generation of healing hands. Please direct all gifts to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. donate.lls.org A celebration of Bonnie's life will be held in Chicago. Please sign the guestbook.
