Obituary
Betty Jane Claus, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 5th at the Gilchrist Hospice in Columbia, Maryland. She was a 22-year resident of Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland but spent her childhood and most of her adult life in Canton, Ohio. Mrs. Claus was a lifelong member of Lowell United Church of Christ in Canton, Ohio.
Mrs. Claus was also an active volunteer here in Maryland, both in the Charlestown United Protestant Church and in her retirement community. She loved traveling both in the U.S. and abroad. She also enjoyed playing in her church's bell choir. She was married to Elmer E. Claus for 35 years until his death in 1987. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and Heidelberg College.
Her two children survive her: David E. Claus (wife, Gail) of Ellicott City, Maryland and Mary Kay Claus (husband, James Sweeney) of Oakton, Virginia. Five grandchildren: Adam (Rachel), April, Erin, Ethan, and Anji and many nieces and nephews also survive her. Her two sisters preceded her in death: Dorothy McDowell and Margaret Leghart.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 11th at 10a.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Slyh officiating. A memorial service will be held at Charlestown at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Charlestown Benevolent Care Fund Attn: Philanthropy (719 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, Maryland 21228).
