Bessie Sklar, age 91, of Canton, passed away Sunday morning, March 2, 2008 in Aultman Hospital. She was born May 25, 1916 in Hurley, Wisconsin to Abraham and Lena (Sampson) Fritzson and was a Canton resident most of her life. Bessie was the bookkeeper for the Canton Jewish Community Center for 26 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue, Agudas Achim Congregation, Hadassah, Jewish Community Center, Women's American ORT and the Ladies Auxiliary branch of the Jewish War Veterans. She was also an active volunteer at Aultman Hospital and supported her children and grandchildren by volunteering at all of the schools they attended. Bessie was the fun loving quintessential volunteer within the Jewish community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Benjamin in 2000. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Linda Sklar of Canton, Jeff and Dale Sklar of Canton; brother and sister-in-law, Israel and Lois Fritzson of Ft. Myers, Florida sister-in-law, Judith Nusbaum of Canton; grandchildren, Mathew Cohen of Canton, Beth Cohen of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Saundra Sklar of Delaware, Ohio, Robyn Sklar of Queens, New York. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother. Funeral services will be Tuesday (TODAY) 1:00 p.m. in Shaaray Torah Synagogue with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment will be in Canton Hebrew Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Shaaray Torah Synagogue or the Canton Jewish Community Center Senior Citizens.
