Bennett "Ben" Shoemaker, age 81, of Canton, passed away Sunday morning, June27, 2010 in his residence. Benny was born on February 18, 1929 in Marlboro Township to the late Ralph and Elsie (Culler) Shoemaker. Ben graduated from Hartville High School in 1947. He was a builder/contracter and was known for building 34 churches in the Northeast Ohio area. Ben was a member of the East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren. He was a former president of the Oakwood High School Booster Club and was very active with the Brethren Disaster Ministries rebuilding homes. Survived by his loving wife of 61 years Joan; four sons and daughters-in-law, Lee , Chet and Laura, Jeff and Beth all of Canton and Tim of Carrollton; Sister, Elsie Berdine (Ernest) Walker of North Canton; Six grandchildren, Justin and Brian Shoemaker, Alice (Mark) Johnston and Adam Shoemaker, Chelsea and Nathaniel Shoemaker; and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a brother Donald Shoemaker. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, at 11:00 AM in the East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren with Pastor Vern Hostetler officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service (10-11:00 AM) in the church.
