Obituary

Arthur Henry Freedman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on November 6 in his Canton, Ohio home. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on March 1, 1916, he was known for his volunteer service, commitment to family, and lifelong learning. His parents, Samuel and Fanny (Cohen) Freedman, moved to Canton in 1920 to establish a small business. After graduating from Market Street Elementary and McKinley High School, Art obtained a degree in Business Administration from Ohio State University. He then enrolled in graduate studies in industrial psychology at Purdue University. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the Army during World War II. He served as a Staff Sergeant, working in personnel deployment in England and France. While overseas, he attended Oxford University. Upon returning home, Art worked at Timken Roller Bearing before joining the family business, Freedman Window Cleaning Company. Eventually he became a partner. Art met Naomi Ginsburg at a dance, and they married in 1948. Last month, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Central to Art's life was his volunteer service to numerous community and religious organizations. Even at age 92, he contributed time generously to the McKinley Museum, Friends of the Library, and AARP Tax Aide for Seniors. He was an active, lifelong member of Temple Israel, where he served on the Board and chaired several committees. He also shared his talent with organizations such as B'nai Brith, Jewish Welfare Fund, Canton Jewish Center, Canton Arts Drive, and medical aide and toy repair programs for the needy. After Art retired from the company, he and Naomi spent winters in Pompano Beach, Florida. While there, he volunteered at the local library and helping seniors with taxes. The couple also traveled to see their children in Colorado and Texas and enjoyed leisure travel. Art is survived by his his wife Naomi, brothers Harry of Canton and Barney of Stuart, FL, son David (Lorie Millenson) of Denver, daughter Mindy (David) Klein of Houston, two granddaughters Julia and Laura Klein, many nieces and nephews, and many other friends and family members. We remember him as a kind, loving, and devoted father, grandfather, and friend who was generous with his time, knowledge, and love. Funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, 333 25th Street N.W., on Monday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Leah Herz and Rabbi John Spitzer officiating. Interment will take place at North Lawn Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel, Stark County District Library, or the McKinley Museum. (Arnold-Canton 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
