IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arline
Sussman
April 12, 1929 – July 2, 2007
Arline Frances Sussman, age 78 of Canton, Ohio died on Monday, July 2, 2007. She was born in Buffalo, New York, the only child of the late Mabel (Mattis) and Emmanuel J. Schwartz. A 1950 graduate of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, Arline's studies in Business Administration served her well in a wide ranging career that spanned 45 years. She was an inspiration to succeeding generations of young working women who found her to be a model of expertise and professionalism while managing an integrated life that included both career and family. After the death of her husband, Louis B. Bleich, M.D., Mrs. Sussman began her career in 1962 at the University of Buffalo under a HEW contract, as a member of a team researching the effects of chemotherapy on Leukemia. After re-marrying and settling in Canton, she worked for two years teaching vocational business courses in the Canton Public Schools. In 1967, Arline found her calling and began a thirty-year profession as a Social Worker at the Stark County Department of Human Services. Initially her work included finding foster homes for children in need of care in alternative settings. She progressed to Probate Court adoption work on behalf of stepparents, and relatives wishing to adopt, writing home studies and presenting recommendations to the court. Additionally, she investigated and reported to the courts concerning children placed in homes illegally. In 1975 Mrs. Sussman was promoted to the position of Supervisor-Family and Children Services, where she managed workers who performed duties connected with children at risk in their own homes, foster care, group homes and alternative placements. Upon her retirement in 1996, Mrs. Sussman was working on Management Analysis and Quality Assurance, a new department at the agency, developing tools for assessing the quality and thoroughness of work done by social workers in the Department of Family and Children Services. Arline was known in the neighborhoods as well as in the courthouses. Speaking about the need for social workers, she was reported in the March 4, 2001 Canton Repository as saying, "People don't have time to look out for other neighborhood children. They're out there working, their children are in day care or they're with baby sitters. Homes are isolated. You don't have porches anymore; you have decks on the back-no one sees you." Mrs. Sussman served on a number of boards and committees. She was most proud of her recent work as Chairperson of Citizens Advisory Board of the Stark Regional Community Corrections Center. In addition to her career and community activism, Arline was a member of Temple Israel and Hadassah. Most importantly, Arline was the mother of four adopted children who she loved dearly. When her children were school aged, most evenings she could be found in the den with her children, laundry basket between her knees, watching television. She was pre-deceased by her son, Scott Leslie Sussman. Survivors include daughters, Pamela Sussman Paternoster (Paul) of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Marcia S. Roth (Howard) of Sherman Oaks California, and Bonnie J. Castellane of Canton and three grandchildren, Rachel Roth and Laura Roth of Sherman Oaks, California and Aaron Paternoster of New York City. A life-long learner, always with a book in her purse, Arline loved her grandchildren, travel, laughter and the company of her family and friends. Services will be held Tuesday (TODAY) at 2:00 PM in Temple Israel with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment in North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
