Alberta (Bertie) Simmons, age 87, passed away February 3, 2017 after a year long illness surrounded by her family, she made her home with her daughter Ellen.

Born in Ironton, Ohio on May 21, 1929, the daughter of the late Jacob and Cosby Jane (Johnson) Cole; the youngest of 6 sisters and 2 brothers (all deceased). Bertie was married August 6, 1946 to Samuel Simmons in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a mother, housewife and worked as a caregiver well into her 80's.

Bertie is survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter: Larry and Janet Simmons of Lake Mohawk, Dennis Simmons of Canton, Ellen Ritzert of Hartville, and Keith Simmons of Canton; 7 grandchildren Laurie Simmons, Penny Hill, Dennis Simmons II, Tabatha Simmons, Michael Ritzert Jr., Jennifer Ritzert, and Ashley Reyes; 10 great-grandchildren Michael Hill, Sammy Simmons, Joshua Wadsworth, Josh Simmons, Aaron Simmons, Cody Wagner, Austin Wagner, Kevin Reyes, Lilyana Reyes and Henry Ritzert; and extended family Mike Ritzert and Maureen Buckel.

Bertie was an active member of Bethany Mennonite Church and a volunteer at Hartville Thrift Shoppe. She loved her family and spent her life taking care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very positive and God loving person who touched everyone with humor and love. She will be greatly missed by all.

Calling hours are Sunday 1:30-4:30 PM at Bethany Mennonite Church and from 9-9:45 AM prior to services Monday. Funeral services are Monday 10 AM in the church with Pastor Dave Slabaugh officiating. Final resting place is Walnut Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Mennonite Church.
