Obituary

The Rev. Dr. Abraham Lyle Brandyberry passed away on Tuesday, February 02, 2010. Born in Alliance, Ohio, on February 15, 1926, he was the 6th of 7 children born to Abraham and Idora Brandyberry (both deceased). He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Loislee (Kemper). He is survived by his daughter Ruth (John) Adams, son Jon (Cindy) Brandyberry, daughter Sara Kibler, son Daniel (Donna) Brandyberry, daughter Lisa Hoobler, 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Sister: Ruth Hammer of Erie, PA and a brother: John Brandyberry of Elizabethtown, PA also survive. Rev. Brandyberry was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Fitch High School in Austintown, Ohio; did his undergraduate studies at Asbury College in Wilmore, KY; received his Masters from the Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, Naperville, IL; a Doctor of Divinity from Oberlin College and an honorary doctorate from Otterbein College. Rev. Brandyberry served parishes in Waterloo IN, Butler OH, Akron Calvary in Akron OH, and Westbrook Park United Methodist Church in Canton OH. He served as District Superintendent in both the Mansfield and St. Clairsville districts of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. During his tenure at Westbrook Park Church, Rev. Brandyberry was the driving force behind the church's Meals on Wheels and the Westbrook Park Nursery School, both of which have now been in operation for over 40 years. Rev. Brandyberry served on the Boards of Trustees for Baldwin Wallace College and Otterbein Home Retirement Community. For several years following retirement, he taught in Jerusalem at the Center for Biblical Studies. Known for his wit and wisdom, Rev. Brandyberry loved woodworking, gardening and all spectator sports. In his forties he realized his lifelong dream of obtaining his pilot's license and flew his Cessna 172. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord! Funeral service will be 12 Noon Saturday, February 6th in Westbrook Park United Methodist Church with Rev. Jonathan R. Reese officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 10 to 11:45 AM in the church. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Westbrook Park Nursery School 2521 12th St., NW Canton, OH 44708.
